The Back Story
BarberCraft is the first event of its kind in New Zealand. It recognises the professionalism and achievements of barbering in our country, and the diversity of service available to kiwi men. BarberCraft also reflects an industry that is undergoing resurgence and revolution both in New Zealand and overseas, but is still built on its original values.
The fundamental services of the barber are traditional – the cut and shave. But the overarching service is changing. Barbering is increasingly about a leisure-type experience for men, and includes entertainment, relaxation and drinks. And it’s about a providing more options for styling, with attentive, personalised service.
BarberCraft highlights the big changes to the industry in recent years – the revolutionised, modern barber shops, and the transformation of more traditional businesses to blend old with new.
Who is behind BarberCraft?
BarberCraft was initiated by the Hair and Beauty Industry Training Organisation, HITO, which is responsible for New Zealand qualifications and apprenticeships in barbering, to celebrate the achievements and progress of barbering around the country.
Barbering is a creative, inspiring and rewarding profession and demands sharp business acumen. The New Zealand qualifications, the National Certificate in Barbering and post-graduate options reflect such skill and professionalism.
Basically, it became obvious it was high time we got together to show what we can do.
