What do apprentices do?
Did you know that to bcome a barber, you can be an apprentice? Apprentices get real hands-on experience and get paid to do the job while being trained by a qualified barber. They start out learning customer service skills and quickly work your way up to cutting and styling skills. Earning while you learn is one of the best ways to become a qualified and professional barber. Being qualified also means you can take on your own apprentices.

Off Job Training
Each year, HITO will arrange for you to attend some training at a local training provider:
- Year 1 – 7 days
- Year 2 – 5 Days
These days will be in one block each year. You’ll be with other barbering apprentices learning additional skills and knowledge that will be assessed.
What you’ll learn
New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Barbering is made up of a number of skills. When you’re finished you’ll be a qualified barber. You’ll have all the technical skills to work as a barber. During your apprenticeship you’ll learn these skills and achieve unit standards and credits along the way.
- the anatomy and physiology of hair and scalp
- designing and shaping beards
- wet shaving with a cutthroat
- hair and scalp conditions
- cutting hair using barbering techniques
In particular, you’ll learn how to work independently and run a commercial barber chair.
It takes 2- 3 years to become a fully qualified barber if you’ve had no other experience. If you come from a barbering course, it should take a lot less.
If you’re an experienced barber (5 years or more) and want to get qualified, then you don’t need to become and apprentice. If you come to HITO (www.hito.org.nz/qualifications/qbye/) we can help you get qualified quickly by taking into account all of your experience.
There is a brand new New Zealand qualification for barbering just launched this year. The skills you learn are in the table.
